The Echeveria ‘Gilva’, in the foreground, I’ve shared about before – not as many flowers as we’ve had previously, but a better showing than expected this year (the weather has been so strange). To the left is Iris foetidissima ‘Variegata’ – a nice, tough, persistent clump of handsome foliage. Behind it, in front of the large terra-cotta pot, is Calamintha nepeta – we’ve seem this a lot growing wild in the South of France. My plants came from the late Wayne Roderick, a local plantsman and plant collector. I really enjoy its fragrant, minty foliage.

To the right of the Calamintha is a pot of hybrid Agengel or Pansy-Faced Pelargonium ‘Angie’ (from our friend Robin at geraniaceae.com). Below ‘Angie’ is a small, blue-gray carpet of Sedum rupestre. I also grow the very closely related S. sediforme, but S. rupestre is distinctive in its flower stems which emerge arched over like an umbrella handle before straightening up when in flower. Between this Sedum and the Echeveria first mentioned, is the foliage of Stachys chrysantha.

In the rear is a large plant of Lavandula dentata and a small potted specimen of L. viridis. The succulent in the top left corner is Crassula perfoliata var. heterotricha.

Moss is either loved or hated in the garden. People very often passionately rake it away. Why not to look at it as blessing to your garden? Its kinds are very difficult to recognize – you need proper book for that and magnifying glass. I don’t remember since when I love moss. I think since always. Soft, fragile and moist. In my garden moss is welcomed everywhere. I try to grow it on my stones as well. Few months ago I covered them with yoghurt dilluted with water 1:1. No great effect yet, just little greenish something appeared.

You can appreciate moss beauty especially in the winter – when it is lush green and so soft to walk on. Grows in the lawn in the shadow? Great! I don’t need to move it. Grass is weaker and weaker in these spots, and moss patches are larger and larger… and more and more green. Moss reminds me my second big and earliest garden fascination of Japanese Gardens.

I look for tranquility and harmony in the garden. In the smaller gardens it is even more important to not overload it with too many different plants.

I like them for meditative and tranquill character. I remember that in communist time in Poland there was not so many books about landscaping and Far East – that was of my special interest at that time. I made friends with the owner of the shop selling used/old books. Whenever something about Japan appeared on the shelf I was getting a phone call and I immediatelly run to the shop to see it.

We don’t want areas of your lawn to burn up as they take a long time to come back to life.

Step# 5 – Crabgrass Control – (revisited)

After about 4 weeks I like to go back and put down a second application of crabgrass control. This will ensure that you have covered the entire lawn. One application never works 100% and you may end up with some crabgrass that will seed itself across the rest of your lawn. Trust me the second application really works.

Step# 6 - Weed control

In this, the sixth article in my series which I call “DeLIGHTed by Design,” I continue to draw on my experience working with some of London’s Top Interior Design Consultancies to explain this exciting area.

Six main lighting tools are considered foundational by established interior design consultancies. These are down-lighters, up-lighters, wall-washers, decorative lighting, colour and control. Many London interior design consultancies will preferentially think of these mostly in terms of mood and results – from daring highlights to soft textures – instead of as hardware and installations.

Down-lighters are often set back into a false ceiling, although some interior design consultancies will prefer to install them on walls. These units will direct light downwards, and can be focused by the design team as necessary, perhaps to illuminate the floor or a favourite contoured bookcase. Most interior design consultancies recognise that this type of light is very sharp and will generate somewhat intense shadows, which can be a refreshing contrast to the occasionally dreary London weather. The most popular units are always available in narrow beam designs, which are best for highlighting certain features. Interior design consultancies will sometimes opt for a wide beam model instead. One nice technique that I have seen used in a few London residences is to create an array of shimmering ceiling lights with wide-beam downlighters.
